Discipline
The Board of Trustees desires to prepare youth for responsible citizenship by fostering self-discipline and personal responsibility. The Board perceives that good planning, a good understanding of each child, and parent involvement can minimize the need for discipline. Teachers shall use positive conflict resolution techniques and avoid unnecessary confrontations. When misconduct occurs, staff shall make every effort to identify and correct the causes of the student's behavior.
BOARD POLICY NO. 6020: FAMILY LIFE/SEX EDUCATION
A. The Governing Board recognizes that the primary responsibility for family life/sex education lies in the home and that schools have a secondary role in supporting and supplementing the home's
responsibility. The local public schools, working in close partnership with families and communities, can assist in developing and reinforcing sound health practices. To this end, the Vista Unified School District offers a family life/sex education program for pupils in grades 5
through 12.
To promote student safety and contribute to the maintenance of a positive school climate, the Board of Education encourages the development of school-based conflict resolution programs designed to help students learn constructive ways of handling conflict. The Board believes that such programs can reduce violence and promote communication, personal responsibility and problem-solving skills among students.

SELECTION OF CURRICULUM-BASED INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
INTRODUCTION
The Governing Board of the San Lorenzo Unified School District supports the basic tenets of academic
freedom and the principles stated in the Library Bill of Rights and the Statement on Intellectual Freedom
issued by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology.
